Creativity on a Budget: Free & Low-Cost Activities to Lift Your Mood and Boost Your Confidence

The BKE Club

Let’s be honest, when life gets busy, stressful, or downright overwhelming, creativity is often the first thing to fall off the to-do list. But here’s the thing: creative play isn’t a luxury ... it’s a lifeline.

At The BKE Club, we believe every woman deserves space to express herself, try new things, and just have fun (without worrying about price tags or Pinterest perfection). That’s why we’ve pulled together a list of free and low-cost creative activities that are good for your mental health, your confidence, and your soul.

So if you’ve been feeling stuck, bored, burnt out or blah, here’s your permission slip to get playful. No art degree required. Just a curious heart, a splash of courage, and maybe a cuppa on the side.

🎨 1. Paint Without a Plan

You don’t need fancy materials, just some paper, old brushes, and whatever paint you’ve got (even kids' poster paint or coffee!). Play with colours, shapes, or even finger painting. Let it be messy. Let it be yours.

Why it helps: Freestyle painting boosts mindfulness and gives your inner perfectionist the day off.

✂️ 2. Make a Collage Mood Board

Grab a stack of old magazines, flyers, or newspapers, some glue, and a bit of cardboard. Create a mood board that reflects how you want to feel, not just what you want to achieve.

Prompt idea: “This is what Big Knicker Energy looks like to me…”

📖 3. Start a Confidence Journal

It doesn’t have to be deep. Each day, write down:

  • One thing you like about yourself

  • One thing you did well

  • One thing that made you smile

Cost: Just a notebook and pen (or even your phone notes app).

Impact: Huge.

🍳 4. Get Creative in the Kitchen

Set yourself a Come Dine With Me challenge using only what’s in your fridge and cupboards. Make it silly. Plate it like you’re on MasterChef. Light a candle. Put on a posh accent.

Bonus: Share your creation in a group chat and start a “Zero Budget Recipe Club.”

🧵 5. Try a No-Pressure Craft

Crafting doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. Try:

  • Paper weaving

  • Upcycling an old jar into a vase or tealight holder

  • Making gift tags from cereal boxes

  • Knitting or crocheting with leftover yarn (or ask on local Facebook groups for scraps!)

💃 6. Dance Like No One’s Scrolling

Create a playlist called “Big Knicker Energy” and have a living room dance party. No mirrors. No judgment. Just movement and mood-boosting music.

Need a song to start with? Try “I Am Woman” by Emmy Meli or “Juice” by Lizzo.

📸 7. Do a Self-Love Photo Challenge

Pick a theme a day for a week and snap a photo that represents it, no pressure to post. Ideas:

  • Something that makes you feel powerful

  • A cosy moment

  • A part of your body you’re learning to love

  • Your “I showed up” face

This isn’t about filters or likes. It’s about seeing beauty through your eyes.

✍️ 8. Write Yourself a Note (and Hide It!)

Write a short, loving note to yourself:

“You’re doing better than you think.”

“I’m proud of you for getting out of bed.”

“You are brave, soft, and powerful all at once.”

Now fold it up and hide it in your coat pocket, under your pillow, or in your sock drawer for future-you to find.

🌿 9. Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt

Whether you’re in the countryside or a city park, head out and spot:

  • Something that makes you smile

  • Something growing in a crack or unexpected place

  • A shape in the clouds

  • Something that reminds you of your childhood

Use your phone camera to collect “finds” and make a digital scrapbook.

🎤 10. Voice Note a Pep Talk

Record a short pep talk to yourself ... yes, like a voice memo. Speak kindly. Say what you need to hear. Play it back when you’re feeling low, anxious, or stuck in your head.

You could also swap voice notes with a friend as a way to lift each other up.

Creativity isn’t about being “good” at something, it’s about feeling more like yourself. It helps us tune into joy, play, and possibility, even in small, quiet ways.

So whether you’re gluing scraps, dancing in your pyjamas, or journalling with a bic pen in a half-used notebook, it counts. It all counts.

You deserve beauty, silliness, and self-expression. You deserve to feel alive and inspired. And you definitely don’t need to spend a fortune to make it happen.

Now go on, get your creative knickers on.
