When You’re Feeling Low (And Don’t Quite Know Why): 7 Gentle Ways to Lift Your Mood

We’ve all had those days. You wake up a bit off. Maybe you feel flat, fuzzy, heavy - or like you could burst into tears for no particular reason. You're not sure what’s wrong, but something's just... not right.
First of all, love: you’re not broken. You’re human.
Sometimes, our brains, hormones, or hearts are doing their own thing behind the scenes, and it doesn’t always come with a neat explanation. You don’t need a “good enough reason” to feel low. You’re allowed to feel however you feel.
But if you’re sitting in that slump wondering, “How do I shift this?” here are 7 gentle, real-life tips to help you feel even just a smidge better.
1. Name it to tame it
You don’t need to analyse yourself like a mystery novel, but giving your feelings a bit of attention can help.
Ask yourself:
Where am I feeling this in my body?
What might my mind be trying to tell me?
Is this tiredness, loneliness, stress, hormones, or just one of those off days?
No pressure to fix it, just acknowledge it. Often, naming the feeling takes the sting out of it.
2. Start small and sensory
When everything feels a bit ‘meh’, go back to basics.
Try something sensory and grounding:
Wash your face with warm (or cold!) water
Light a candle and sit with the scent
Stand outside and feel the air on your skin
Sip something warm and lovely
It’s not about achieving enlightenment, just giving your nervous system a little cuddle.
3. Move your body gently
You don’t need to smash a HIIT workout. A slow stretch, a short walk, or even a bop to a feel-good playlist in your kitchen can help shift the emotional fog.
Movement isn’t punishment, it’s permission to feel.
Bonus BKE tip: Create a “Big Knicker Energy” playlist full of songs that make you feel unstoppable. Belt them out and dance like no-ones watching.
4. Text your safe person
You don’t need to explain much, try:
“Hey, I’m feeling a bit low and not sure why. Can I just chat nonsense with you for a bit?”
Connection helps. Even if it’s just a few messages back and forth about how fit Channing Tatum is (we won’t judge).
5. Let yourself off the hook
You are not lazy, dramatic, or failing. You’re feeling something, and that is enough.
If all you manage today is brushing your teeth and putting on clean pants, that’s a win. Some days we conquer the world. Some days we just survive it. Both count.
6. Try one tiny thing that brings you happiness (or used to)
Low moods often convince us nothing will help, so we do nothing, and the cycle continues.
Try gently proving that voice wrong.
Rewatch a comfort show
Doodle or colour something badly
Journal like you’re writing to your teenage self
Bake something chaotic and full of sprinkles
Look at funny dog videos until your cheeks twitch
Joy doesn’t have to be deep. Sometimes it’s just daft.
7. Remember: this too shall pass (yes, even this weird fog)
Feelings are like the British weather, changeable, often dramatic, and rarely predictable. But they do pass. You won’t feel like this forever.
Be kind to yourself while you wait for the sunshine to return. Or at least some decent snacks.
Final word from us
You don’t need to be “fine” all the time. You don’t have to slap on a smile or pretend to be okay when you’re not.
But you also don’t have to stay stuck.
Reach for the tools. Reach for your people. Reach for your big knickers, even.
You’ve got this, even if today, “this” just means making it to bedtime.
